"Learn To Play" with GarageBand '09

Category apple garage band recording
Apple announced at Macworld that with the new version of Garage band (part of the iLife package) you can now learn to play guitar or keyboards along with some of your favorite artists. For around $4.99 you will be able to download video lessons that teach you basic playing techniques as well as let you jam along with artists such as Sting, Ben Folds and John Fogherty. As you play a virtual fretboard/keyboard shows beneath the video to show you how to play the song. There will also be background info from the artist on things like what inspired the song or any stories of the recording experience.

Another feature will give you the ability to plug in a USB keyboard or your guitar via a USB adapter and jam along with different styles of music. And when you're done you can edit the mix and save it to show all your friends.

Now, tis is by no means a replacement for a high end production suite like Pro Tools or Sonar. Its really there for the average Joe to learn how to play and get in and have some fun. Sounds like another cool feature from Apple. Now, if they would only release OSX for other hardware...

Songsmith is pretty simple to use. When you fire it up you can choose from one of thirty differnet musical styles. Hit record and start singing. When you stop Songsmith will create an accompaniment for you and - viola! You're a songwriter. Granted, the arrangments can be a little simple at first. But fear not! Several sliders allow you to change the feal of the song as well as change some of the chords around.

Something else that's kinda fun to do is to take some of your favorite songs and change their genres around. Hip Hop Johnny Cash anyone? What about Celtic Jay Z? The combinations are endless and fun. A variety of people have posted their creations on Youtube (Calypsio "Roxanne" by The Police).

You may now begin creating
