The Mission Of This Blog

Anyone who knows me personally has, as of late, caught an earful about Sonicjams Media Group. Those of you who don't know me are about to.
Sonicjams started out as a venture between Chris Beaver and I in 2003 when we both decided we had had enough of mainstream radio. None of the music we liked was played on it (ok some was but not much) and even the "indie" and "alternative" stations played the same 40 song hit list throughout the day. It was tiring to say the least. We also both knew a lot of musicians who put out some really great stuff but just had not happened to have the nephew of the A&R guy at <insert your favorite Big 5 label here> see them play yet. So we decided to try and give them a voice. So, before the RIAA had decided to suck the music fans dry, before myspace music hit, before podcasting became a word we started up Sonicjams.com.
Sonicjams was meant to have tow sides - commercial music and underground artists. On the commercial side we were going to have a jukebox of our music where users could go and play any song they wanted out of our library on demand. I was also going to produce 4 hour radio shows for each of the numerous genres of music we had. And I'm not just tlaking playlist automation either. I was going to produce shows with drops, voice overs, interviews, the whole nine. We were also going to have the same features on the underground side but also give the artists a page to upload their content, communicate with their fans, keep a calendar of their shows, post news, etc.
So cut to 2006. I had just been through 4 major eye surgeries. Chris' life was in its normal bits of turmoil. Congress had completely redefined "Fair Use and the Internet Radio scene had completely changed Oh yeah - and the RIAA sent us a cease and decist letter (and we hadn't even really told more than 20 people about the site yet).
Cut to the beginning of 2008. While we still want to provide services for underground artists our commercial music will not be available anymore. And I've also changed the scope of what we do. Sort of. While a full service list is still being developed things that we currently do are audio/video remastering (taking old cassettes and turning them into CDs/transferring old video tapes to DVDs), digital slideshows (your photos to a music soundtrack in DVD or video file format), podcasting production and consulting, and a few other things.
So why the blog? Well, I love to babble. And I love to let people in on cool stuff I've learned. This will also work in conjunction with the Digital Media Revolution podcast that will be released shortly. I'll put things in here like cool apps I've found, news I've heard. And oh yes... lots of opinion.
I hope you can look at this site as a great source of information for all things Digital Media. Please drop me a line or leave a comment to let me know how I'm doing and if I can make it better for you somehow.
Shine On,
Dave
